John Carmack, ‘Quake’ Creator, Is The Man To Beat

John Carmack has made a name for himself by programming one the first commercially successfull virtual reality applications, Wolfenstein 3D. The key to this success was the decision to give away this very popular game, a strategy which hooked an audience eager to spend money on the next generation of games to emerge from his company, Id Software. He and partners released Doom and Quake and soon he could afford his second Ferarri. He is now playing with the kind of speed necessary to escape Earth’s atmosphere. It just takes money, brains, and a garage. Armadillo Aerospace is a small research and development team working on computer-controlled hydrogen peroxide rocket vehicles, with an eye towards X-Prize class vehicle development in the coming years. The team currently consists of a bunch of guys, a girl, and an armadillo named Widget. Our fearless leader, John Carmack, will lead us to space and, well, outer space.
